Great Green Tea: Half from West Lake, Half from Thousand Island Lake

Image
When people think of China’s finest green tea, they picture West Lake in Hangzhou—the villages of Longjing and Meijiawu, Emperor Qianlong’s legendary “Eighteen Imperial Tea Bushes,” and a cup of flat, jade-green leaves releasing delicate chestnut notes. And they’re not wrong. West Lake Longjing is indeed one of China’s most iconic teas. But few know that 150 kilometers southwest of Hangzhou, amid the emerald waters of Thousand Island Lake, lies another chapter of tea history—one far older, equally profound, and unjustly overlooked. Here, during the Tang Dynasty (618–907 CE), tribute tea known as Jiukeng Maojian was sent to the imperial court. Lu Yu, the Sage of Tea, recorded its origin in his Classic of Tea (Cha Jing). Centuries later, seeds from this very land would travel to Japan, Kenya, and beyond, shaping green tea across continents. Today, protected as a Class-I national water source, this region bans chemical pesticides entirely—yielding tea of unmatched purity and freshnes...

Another miracle of green tea! Jinan University researchers find green tea has anti-coronavirus properties, including mutants

The production and consumption of tea has a history of more than 4,000 years. At present, more than 2 billion cups of tea are consumed every day in the world, which is second only to water in terms of global consumption. Previously published research has shown that regular consumption of green tea and coffee has health benefits because these beverages contain a variety of bioactive compounds. However, little is known about green tea's antiviral properties. On March 17, 2021, a study by researchers at Jinan University on the bioRxiv preprint platform reports that green tea has antiviral activity, adding to its long-term health benefits. In the new study, epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), one of the components of green tea, prevented severe SARS-CoV-2 from binding to the human angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) receptor, thereby preventing infection in humans lung cells, and inhibitory effects were also observed in SARS-CoV-2 variants. The main active ingredients in green tea are ...

New Study Finds: Green Tea Extract Promotes Gut Health, Lowers Blood Sugar

Image
New research in people with a range of heart disease risk factors shows that drinking green tea extract for four weeks can lower blood sugar levels and improve gut health by lowering inflammation and reducing "leaky gut." The research was recently published in "Recent Developments in Nutrition." The researchers say this is the first study to assess whether the health risks associated with metabolic syndrome are reduced by the anti-inflammatory effects of green tea in the gut. Metabolic syndrome affects about one-third of Americans. "There is a lot of evidence that high consumption of green tea is associated with good levels of cholesterol, glucose, and triglycerides, but no studies link green tea's gut benefits to these health benefits," said senior study author Richard Bruno, professor of human nutrition at The Ohio State University. factors are linked.”. The team conducted the clinical trial in 40 individuals as a follow-up to a 2019 study that show...

Chinese Green Tea Golden Triangle

Image
The so-called "Golden Triangle of Green Tea" refers to the most favorable area with the most concentrated green tea producing areas in China. It can be divided into three levels, small triangle, middle triangle and large triangle. The small triangle is the core area of the green tea golden triangle, including Xiuning, Wuyuan, Kaihua and its surrounding areas; the middle triangle is the "green tea golden triangle", including the Huangshan area of Anhui, Shangrao area of Jiangxi and Jingdezhen, as well as the Quzhou area of Zhejiang and Chun'an Stream. The Great Triangle is an extension of the Green Tea Golden Triangle, which refers to the triangle area rich in high-quality green tea in the three provinces of Zhejiang, Anhui, and Jiangxi within the range of 28°-32° north latitude.
